Andrew Bradwell

The club are sorry to announce that long standing member Andrew Bradwell passed away last week.

Fellow YG Jonathan Crabtree informed the club of the news and has forwarded on the details for the arrangements.

“Bradders funeral is next Thursday, 2pm at St Roberts, Harrogate, then afterwards at Harrogate Cricket Club, which I think is apt. We spent many happy years there, me mainly watching him stylishly leave half volleys..

All that knew him very welcome at both”

YG's fade in the heat against Durham Pilgrims

The YG’s came up short against a strong Durham Pilgrims side on Wednesday 21st July.

The visitors batted first and got off to a blistering start racking up 100 runs in the first hour of play. C Steele was especially brutal scoring 68 off 49 balls. The recent hot weather had created a dew which did not help our bowlers during this time. After the initial onslaught and the drying of the outfield, the YG’s started to get into the match and whilst runs continued to flow wickets were taken at regular intervals. Angus Shaw’s spin was the main beneficiary taking 5 wickets as the batsmen sought to take him on. He finished with 80-5 off 13 overs. James van de Merwe also took 3 to help bowl out the visitors for 235 which came off just 38 overs.

It was all looking good for the home team in response with a 66 run opening stand between James Van de Merwe (37) and A Wood (35). Progress was continued by Richard Musgrave (44) and Will Shaw (29) who both looked relatively comfortable in spite of the very hot playing conditions. With plenty of time in the match and at 147 for 3 the game was very much on. Unfortunately Richard got out on the stroke of drinks with a shot that by his own admission was born out of thirst. A misjudged sharp single saw new batsmen Geoff Barker go for a duck and with that the game swung to the Durham Pilgrims. A clatter of wickets followed and only late resistance from club Chairman John Skinner (13 off 28 balls) and Neil Dale (4 not out off 17) gave any feignt hopes to salvaging a draw but alas it was not to be. YG’s all out for 196.

Can I just say what a positive delight it was to play our first 'proper'
game of cricket for two years at Escrick on Wednesday.

Hospitality, conviviality and joviality were nonpariel.

Thank you and please pass on our thanks to one and all, you even sorted
the weather although some of the boys seem to have been rather thirsty
looking at the bar bill.

Good to see the Chairman fully utilised doing long off at both ends,
doing the drinks and sightscreens and pretty much all of the chores.

Lunches return to Escrick and Exley makes maiden ton

Lunches return to Escrick for the first time since 2019.

From our Chairman John Skinner - “I am pleased to confirm that following Boris’s recent announcement some normality can resume at Escrick after 19th July. Our fixtures will revert to our time-honoured format and our fabulous catering and hospitality will be resuming at lunch and tea.

At present food is being served inside on a take out basis, and eaten outside the pavilion. Changing rooms are also open for use at the players discretion.

I would ask that we all remain responsible (at Boris’s request!) and the club will ensure that sanitiser remains available in the pavilion and everywhere remains ventilated .


I must thank everyone who has contributed to ensuring that games have been played during these difficult times and hope that we are once again all able to meet up at Escrick over the remaining weeks of the summer.”

Richard Exley makes maiden ton in win against against Romany - Sunday 18th July

Match report by Alex Bindloss.

Jason Dale captained the Yorkshire Gentlemen in this fixture against the Romany. He won the toss and on a very hot day chose to bat.

With a smaller boundary to normal the YG's batsmen made full use of it as openers Alex Wood (33) and Rich Exley got off to a fluent start. It was the 21st over when their partnership was broken the score 75. Matt Huffer (19) came to the crease and supported Exley as he started to up the scoring rate, he passed his 50 and kept making the batting look easier and easier. He achieved three figures just after the 40th over securing his maiden century, finishing on a superb unbeaten 114. Salman Syed (21) and Pradeep (10) both had useful cameos in the final overs as the gents pushed past 200.

Will Middleton reunited with Alex Bindloss for the first time this season as the YG's opened the bowling with the two lefties. Bindloss got a wicket in his second over as the gents struck early. No.3 Tarvas batted very well and the Romany started to build a platform. Captain Dale turned to Salman to break the partnership and he provided the breakthrough thanks to a catch in the slips by the man of the moment Exley. He had spent every minute of the game on the field and despite the heat came on the bowl, a wicket was taken with his 5th ball continuing his brilliant day.

Despite wickets at the other end Tarvas (73) was able to find the boundary with regularity and was keeping the Romany in the game, openers Middleton and Bindloss returned and with the required run rate moving above six the batsmen began to hit out. Bindloss was the main beneficiary from this as he claimed 4 wickets in his second spell, Exley taking another two catches.

Bindloss finished with figures of 5-14 off his 8.1 overs, but undoubtedly the man of the match was Rich Exley, a wicket, 3 catches and his maiden ton an all round perfect day, well played Rich!

Paul White reported it was a flawless knock by Richard and also noted Alex’s superb bowling contribution. On any other day he would have been a contender for Man of the Match. A good win for the YG’s, and a very enjoyable day of cricket.

Match Reports: Cheshire Gents and Harrow Wanderers

YG’s v Cheshire Gents - 8th July

The Yorkshire Gentlemen, captained by Neil Dale, won the toss and chose to bat. Openers Geoff Barker and David O'Kelly batted sensibly and carefully. Thanks to a series of leg side boundaries from Barker the score started to tick along, he was the aggressor in the partnership but was dismissed for 33, the score on 53.

James Rossington and James Van Der Merwe both chipped in with 18 whilst David carried on. The introduction of C. Baker marked the start of a collapse for the Gents, he took 5 wickets in a 9 over spell. Opposition captain and YG's member Wayne Goldstein returned to remove O'Kelly for a top score of 69 and the innings ended shortly after on 169.

In reply runs the Cheshire gents made a good start targeting several of our bowlers in the first 14 overs. Alex Bindloss kept his end tight conceding only 12 runs from 7 overs, but 58 runs came from the other end. Chaminda was batting extremely well and reach his 50 in the 16th over. He proceeded to move through the gear scoring all around the ground.

Christopher Stride was able to take two quick wickets to apply a temporary break ending a 92 run opening partnership but the damage was already done. Drinks were taken at 5pm and the run chase was wrapped up 20 minutes later. Scott Coates did remove centurion Chaminda with the score levels, but it was a well deserved victory for our visitors who chased down 169 in 31 overs.

It was an enjoyable days cricket and we look forward to welcoming them back next season.

YG’S vs Harrow Wanderers - 9th July

The Yorkshire Gentlemen played their second game in as many days and once again chose to bat. Captain of the day was James Rossington.

The Gents lost wickets regularly and despite opener Malloch batting well for his 42 the home team found themselves 107-8 still with a lot of time left in the game. Number 10 Tom Rossington helped his brother out immensely as he batted very well for 32, the Gents last two wickets adding 50 crucial runs ending on a respectable 157.

In reply 6 overs were bowled before the tea break in which the Wanders negotiated well moving to 21 without loss. Alex Bindloss struck in his second over after tea and then once again in his next over, continuing from his good bowling the previous day. Scott Coates also chipped in making a break through, the game was swinging towards the gents with the Wanders 45-3.

Harrows Richardson brothers were now at the crease and they started to steadily rebuild and took in game into the final 20 overs, the YG's needing 7 wickets and the Wanders needing 74. The Gents needed to break this partnership and the man to do it was Dewi Winkle, he removed both the brothers in the same over and kept the Gents in the game.

Captain Rossington still needed wickets and he rolled with dice as he turned to O'Kelly. It seemed to have back fired as his second over was hit for 16 but he kept him on and was rewarded. O'Kelly took 4 wickets in 4 overs, the Wanders stumbling to 125-9. Only 7 overs left to score 33 Chopra kept going for the win after striking a six and 2 fours, Harrow found themselves only needing 10 for victory but O'Kelly pulled through again bowling Chopra to secure the game and claiming himself a 5 wicket haul in the process.

Thrilling win against the Halifax Nomads - 27th June

Report:

The Yorkshire Gentlemen hosted the Halifax Nomads this Sunday in what turned out to be an exhilarating match. The weather was relatively overcast and still from the outset.

It was Will Shaw’s first outing as skipper and in typical Shaw fashion he managed to fail at his first job, when he lost the toss. Unsurprisingly, Halifax Nomads elected to bat and the Yorkshire Gentlemen found themselves in the field.

Angus Smith and Harry Lamb opened the bowling for the Gents and provided a steady start. Lamb was getting the ball to move but the Nomad’s opening pair managed to stand up to it and got off to a nice start. Their opening partnership was eventually broken by first change bowler Salman Syed with his second ball, thanks to a good catch by Joe Biggs. At this point the Nomad’s found themselves 35-1.

Further progress was seen from J Lord and R Wynn of the Nomads until Syed was able to strike again. The Nomads found themselves 65-2 and in a relatively strong position after 15 overs. Some excellent middle overs bowling from Phil Holland was able to slow the progress of the Nomads. Holland eventually finishing with figures of 1-23 off his 8 overs. However, the death bowling of David O’Kelly and Rich Exley stemmed the flow of runs dramatically for the Nomads. Pace off the ball was evidently the way forward. O’Kelly was the standout bowler finishing with 2-19 off his 7 overs.

The Nomads posted a very good total of 176-8 off there 40 overs. Which the Gents knew was going to be a difficult task to chase.

O’Kelly and Jason Dale opened for the Gents and dealt with a tricky opening spell from G Gibson and R Shuttleworth. An excellent opening stand of 100 exactly after 26 overs put the Gents in good stead to chase down the total set by the Nomads. O’Kelly fell first for a well made 44. Geoff Barker replaced him and steadied the ship. Barker supported Dale as he continued to take it to the Nomads attack, eventually falling for an excellent 63. While Barker fell for 15 on the last ball of the 35th over. H Lamb and J Biggs replaced the two set batsmen with Biggs arriving at the crease with 38 required at the end of the 35th over. This was just over 8 an over. An excellent display of batting from both Lamb and Biggs saw the Gents requiring 5 to tie and 6 to win from the last over of the game. 

Lamb rather nervously played and missed at the first two balls of the last over and the Gents found themselves needing 5 off 4 balls. A single was then taken, followed by a bye. The situation was now 3 runs from 2 balls with Lamb on strike. Lamb managed a 2 which meant 1 run was needed from the last ball. The draw was secured but the Gents wanted the win. Lamb confidentiality cover drove the last ball for four through the field that was brought up by the Nomads. This ended a great game of cricket for all concerned. Lamb and Biggs played and ran excellently to secure the win. Lamb finished on 25 not out and Biggs finished on 11 not out.

YG’s V Emerit XI - 23rd May

Alex Bindloss sends in his match reports from the games. First up is the club’s game against the Emeriti XI on the 23rd May.

The Yorkshire Gentlemen travelled to Ampleforth to face the Emeriti this Sunday. It was a cold windy day up in the hills and a very damp outfield thanks to Saturdays rain. Runs were tricky to come by in this low scoring affair.

The Gents side was captained by David O'Kelly. The Gents batted first and the captain himself was forced to leave the field after being struck in the head by a sharp bouncer in the second over. Things didn't improve for the Gents as Rutter removed 3 in his opening spell leaving us on 22-3 after 11. Salman Syed and Pradeep Bas started a slow rebuilding job and survived to the 20th over. When Pradeep departed the score still only on 48. Syed fell for a top score on the day of 29, the next top scorer for the gents was extras (24).

Some useful contributions down the order from Dewi Winkle, Rich Exley and Alex Bindloss gave the gents a score of 125. A low total but one which the Gents captain felt could be defended on this tricky surface.

No batsman dominated at any stage of the day and this continued into the Emeriti innings.

Wickets for Alex Bindloss and Phil Holland in the 3rd and 4th over had the home side 4-2, just the start the Gents needed. The third wicket fell thanks to a very good catch from Charlie O'Kelly but the runs required were already in double figures. Bevan Fawcett was brought on and had immediate success with his first delivery taking a great one handed caught and bowled. He continued to take wickets finishing with 4 and the Emeriti slipped to 48-8. The ninth fell with the score on 69. This left the Emeriti final pair needing 57 to win. Thanks to economical bowling, the run rate moved just above 6 for the first time but the pair were playing well and both moved into the 20s. (The two top scorers for the Emeriti coming from their numbers 10 and 11).

Having guided themselves past the 100 mark they only needed 26 from the final 6 overs. But their efforts were in vain as the Emeriti captain perished, caught on the boundary by Exley off the bowling of Pradeep. An impressive final partnership, (the biggest of the match) shifting the pressure back onto the Gents in a thoroughly entertaining match.

YG’s V The Old Amplefordians - 30th May

The Yorkshire Gentlemen took on the Old Amplefordians this Sunday on seemingly the first true day of summer. It was a misty morning at Ampleforth and the dew stuck around on the outfield for a while despite the hot sun shining throughout the day. This was also the first timed fixture of the season. Hopefully as more restrictions are lifted we will have many more timed games as the season commences.

The Gents were asked to field and it took 15 overs before they first struck. The score was only on 24 thanks to tight spells from Alex Bindloss (6 overs for 3) and Kalpesh (5 overs for 9). It was Chris Stride who found the break through and he continued to cause trouble as he took 4 wickets in his first 4 overs, (including YG's member Bevan Fawcett for a first ball duck! Two further wickets fell and the home side were struggling on 55-6 when lunch was taken. A superb session for the Gents after being put into the field on a hot day. After lunch Fitzherbert and Maclellan rebuild the home sides innings putting on 61 before Bindloss removed them both in his second spell. They fell for 43 and 38 respectively. Good cameos from Prest (37) and Butler (23) took The Old Amplefordians to 197 before they were bowled out in the 61st over.

This gave the Gents a short 50 minute session before tea. One wicket fell in the 17 overs bowled, the Gents only making it to 17 with 11 maidens bowled in this period. After tea the Gents set about scoring the remaining 180 runs needed, while David O'Kelly went about building his innings, numbers 3 and 4, Rich Exley and Kalpesh looked to up the scoring. They both made 22 and 24 as the gents put their foot on the gas. Salman Syed came to the crease and with O'Kelly they took the runs required to double figures.

With 10 overs to go just 64 were needed with 7 wickets still in hand. 48 were needed when O'Kelly fell for 67. This slowed the scoring down but Phil Holland came and hit a mighty six while scoring well along side Salman. With 13 were requited of the final over, Salman reached his 50 but then perished in the boundary next ball. 10 were required of the final 2 balls but the YG’s could not get over the line, leading to the first drawn game of the season. The Gents falling 8 runs short of victory.

YG’s V Collingham and Linton — Sunday 6th June Cancelled.

Sadly if you were hoping to make it to Escrcik for this Sunday’s match against Collingham and Linton - Sunday 6th June, it has had to be called off owing to the opposition needing to play a cup tie postponed due to poor weather last month. Fixture Secretary Bill Dalton had hoped to find a replacement fixture but to no avail.

The YG’s next play on Wednesday 9th June against York University. More warm sunny weather please.
