David O’kelly was once again in the runs as a superb 97 was the mainstay of the YG’s innings of 185-7 declared.

Batting first the YG’s were reduced to 60-4 but an 88 run stand by David O’Kelly and Richard Musgrave (38) helped the club to establish a competitive total.

In response the Cryptics were always in control of the run chase even when they went down to 42-2. Jack Rowett bowled well in a spell of 2-21 off 10 overs but the visitors accelerated in the final hour scoring their last 100 runs in 15 overs to complete a five wicket win.

Just six days of cricket left for the YG’s this season - where has the summer gone

Another enjoyable match - a real shame it could not run its course.

The YG’s take on the Leicestershire Gents tomorrow - let’s hope the rain stays away.

Pankaj Saini inspires YG's to win over Romany

Pankaj Saini scored a superb 82 out of a total of 142 when the YG’s entertained The Romany at Escrick last Sunday.

Batting first a very strong Romany opening attack had the the YG’s reeling on 14-4 before before the very gentlemanly and sensible decision of Romany skipper Matthew Knight to rest his opening bowlers as soon as he did.

Match winning performance by Pankaj against the Romany

The YG’s slowly rebuilt around the excellent innings of Pankaj but the innings ended on 142 all out with The Romany in a good position.

The wicket always offering something for the bowlers and in response the YG’s bowlers quickly cut into the Romany batting, with a superb opening spell by AJ Clark 4-29 backed up well by the Bindloss duo -2 a piece and undoubtedly man on the match Pankaj on 2-31.

The Romany finished on 97 all out. A good game of cricket all round and thank-you once again The Romany for the excellent spirit in which the match was played.

YG's secure first win since 15th May and England win their first ever World Cup

A memorable sporting Sunday saw the YG’s claim their first win for two months whilst at St John’s Wood England were triumphant in one of the most incredible games of cricket ever played.

No need to inform you of the details at Lords but in Escrick - YGs lost the toss and were asked to field on a damp square and a wicket that looked to benefit the bowler. A tidy opening spell from Duncan and Jonny Anderson has the visitors at 31-1 off 14 overs, then wickets fell before and after lunch with Tom Kemp getting a decent 54 to take The Penguins to 159 all out. 3 wickets for Mike Furze and Will Anderson and a red box catch from Duncan Anderson.

The YGs reply started swiftly with 40-0 off 5 overs including 3 consecutive 6s from Isaac Green, ably supported by Geoff Barker on 3*. Post tea Geoff Barker went on to score 53 not out to see the YG’s home with 9 balls to spare.

Chairman in the runs as YG's lose in in two closely fought matches

In spite of David O’kelly scoring the first century for a YG’ since 2017 The YG’s lost to The Harrow Wanderers by two wickets on Friday 5th July.

David’s fine century was well supported by Geoff Barker - 49 and with a healthy quotas of extras the YG’s declared on 202 for 5.

In reply the YG’s bowled well and had The Wanderers 98-5 , with Chris Stride taking three wickets and Neil Reader two. However strong lower order batting and a great knock D Puri (90) saw the Wanderers Home by two wickets. A terrific game of cricket.

On Sunday The YG’s welcomed the Pocklington Pixies . Batting was tough for the YG’s with only David O’kelly (60) scoring above 30. The team were bowled out for 169.

In reply the YG’s bowled well but were not able to stop the Pocklington Pixies reaching their target with two overs and three wickets to spare.

Two close finishes and a good week of Cricket. The YG’s will be looking forward to posting anther win soon.

YG's looking to get back to winning ways

With the season in full swing and a warmer spell of weather the YG’s are looking to find the early season form which saw them win their first four matches.

The last month has seen two cancellations due to the weather with Giggleswick School and York University, and Borderers unfortunately unable to get a side together

We have lost matches to The West Riding ( a low scoring game ) and to The Cheshire Gents and The Halifax Nomads - both by 5 wickets in well fought matches that could easily have resulted in draws.

In between the club hosted its annual 6-a-side competition which provided to be a thoroughly enjoyable day for all who took part.

An update with news from the three games being played in the first week of July will follow soon. Long may the dry warm weather continue.

Ampleforth Boys beat the YG's in the last over of play

A terrific game of cricket at Ampleforth College with a win for the boys in the last over of play.

The YG’s batted first and had quite a rollercoaster of an innings. Two down inside 20 minutes then a recovery to 90 for 3 with W Shaw making a very good 49. A middle order collapse saw the YG’s collapse to 103 for 7. However Bevan Fawcett (77) led a recovery with the help of Phil Holland (29) and got the team to a very respectful 195 for 9

In reply the boys always looked in control of the chase as the YG’s gifted a few runs in the field and always felt to be a bowler light. However with tight bowling by Pankaj Saini and Phil Holland during the late stages of the game, a very nervy finish ensued and with a couple of run outs the boys slipped from 149-1 to 186 for 6.

With the last over of play in the day the boys still needed 5 to win. They got over the line with two balls to spare.

Paul White commented that it was ‘an excellent and most entertaining game”

Can the YG’s get back to winning ways in their next fixture?

YG's strong start to the season stalls with back to back defeats

The YG’s lost to St Peters School in the week in a keenly fought match. Batting first St Peters bowled tightly and restricted the Yg’s to 155 all out. Bevan Fawcett constructed a well made fifty and Angus Shaw provided the innings with much need momentum late on with a quick fire 24.

In response St Peters reached their target with a few overs to spare to inflict the clubs first defeat of the season.

Travelling to Ampleforth on the bank holiday Sunday the YG’s came second against a strong OACC at Ampleforth.
Batting first, YGs never really built on a strong start. Harry Glatman scored a Vince-like 45 but no one else kicked on. 174-8 looked short of par and so it proved. The OACC openers got away quickly and despite one wicket either side of tea, OACC got the runs comfortably.

The YG’s will hope to be back to winning ways when they take on the Borderers at Cliffe Hall on Sunday 2nd June.
