Winning Run ends with defeat to Free Foresters

Match report by Alex Bindloss

A YG's side which featured 6 of the victorious players from the previous weekend hosted a young Free Forester's side which included the nephew of England legend Chris Tavare. With rain threatening to be an issue later in the day an early 12.30 start was implemented.

The toss was won by the Free Foresters and so the home side took to the field. The YG's started well, taking wickets regularly with the visitors reduced to 80-8 off 21 overs. 3 wickets going to seamer A.Bindloss (3-20), one of the 3 left arm quicks at Captain Holland's disposal. The captain leading by example in the field with a superb direct hit run out. Despite these constant wickets the remaining Forester's batsman played very positively. A philosophy adopted by the entire team with aggressive running and good stroke play. With the damp outfield making boundaries hard to come by the forsters never let the wickets build pressure with only one maiden being bowled in the whole innings. A crucial 9th wicket partnership of 70 between C.Oliver (56*) and O.Mckeown (20) took the side past 150 and they eventually finished on 172-9 in the 37th over where the players came off for the expected rain delay. With the rain the captains decided to take tea and reduce the overs to 38 a side, and a revised target of 177 was set.

Much like the first innings the YG's had the better of the first 20 overs, an opening partnership of 96 between J.Rowett (33) and Will Shaw (66) put the home side in pole position needing only 89 off the last 18 overs with 9 wickets in hand. However, with the top 3 falling to the spin of S.Perry (10-4-21-3) whose last 3 overs went for no runs and the loss of 2 wickets, the required run rate quickly rose. The new batsman to the crease struggled to find the boundary with well set fields stopping many 4s and 2s as the impetus in the YG's innings floundered and ultimately fell well short by 22 runs ending on 157-4.

A sad end to a successful run for the YG's in this 2020 season but the team will be playing again next Sunday against Pocklington Pixies. Looking to get back to winning ways.

YG's 9 wicket win over the Radley Rangers

YG's 9 wicket win over the Radley Rangers

Another wonderful weekend of cricket for the YG’s who hosted the Radley Ranger’s in a two day game.

Under slate grey Yorkshire skies that would have troubled the light meters of most umpires the Rangers opted to bat first. They batted well and with purpose compiling a competitive first innings total of 219-7 declared after 41 overs. Mungo Fawcett top scored with a quick fire 48 not out. Alex Bindloss and Will Middleton did the bulk of the work for the YG’s with good spells either side of the lunch break.

5 in 5 for the YG's

5 in 5 for the YG's

The YG’s secured their 5th straight win against the Woodhouse Grange Academy on Sunday.

Batting first the YG’s set a very competitive total of 215 for 4 from their allotted overs. The foundation was laid by a superb 84 by David O’Kelly, well backed up by Geoff Barker - 19, and Jason Dale, 22.

However, it was the late innings hitting of Salmon Syed with a thunderous 45 not out off just 17 deliveries that gave the total a significant boost. With Will Shaw (13 off 6) they added 57 in 5 overs.

Two more wins for the YG's

The YG’s maintain their 100 per cent record to the start of the rescheduled season with two impressive wins.

For the first August match last Sunday the YG’s welcomed the Halifax Nomads. Batting first on a sunny yet breezy afternoon, the YG’s opened with David and Charlie O’Kelly, playing their first match together this season. It wasn’t to be their day, but with some superb batting from Will Shaw (41) , Salman Syed( 63), and a fine knock by Hugo Adams (74), the home side amassed 256 for 6 off the allotted 40 overs. With the wicket playing well and a superbly maintained outfield the batters got full reward for their shots.

YG's welcome Brocklesby Park to Escrick

Sunday saw the YG’s welcome Brocklesby Park for the first time to Escrick.

On a breezy afternoon Brocklesby batted first but after a solid 36 run opening partnership struggled against some good bowling by the YG’s. They were eventually dismissed for 81 in just under 27 overs. Jana top scored with 23 before being run out by Phil Holland.

The wickets were shared between, A.J Clarke (1-11), Pradeep (3-25) , Richard Exley (2-5) and David O’Kelly (2-2). Tidy work all round.

In reply the YG’s knocked the runs off in the 23rd over for the loss of David O’Kelly - 24 and Jason Dale - 36.

A good win and an enjoyable afternoon of cricket for both teams. Everyone getting use to the Covid compliant rules.

The YG’s host Halifax Nomads this Sunday and the Forty Club the following Tuesday. We are promised the return of the Summer weather this coming weekend.
