Season in Full Swing as the hot dry summer continues

Lots of cricket being played by the YG's during this hot sunny summer. A couple of losses have dented our record a little but it is still proving to be a good season for the club. A heavy loss to a strong Cheshire Gents side and a close exciting Match v the Langdale Lovelies being the only two defeats to date.

Last week saw the return of Jeff Thorburn to the club who brought with him selection of planters and hanging baskets to brighten up the clubhouse. A huge thank-you goes to Jeff who who also did the honour of umpiring the drawn match again the Halifax Nomads.

Bring a camera out and it causes out all sorts of funny reactions. Bill Dalton our resident umpire far more interested in showing his best side to camera and not paying attention to the cricket.

The YGs excellent start to the season continues with a win away against Ampleforth College. Batting first Chairman David O'Kelly was the cornerstone of the innings with 67. Phil Holland also made a valuable contribution of 24 in the YG's 156 for 8 Dec.

The game was played on another lovely  warm and sunny day with a fair number of spectators on the grassy banks.

In response to the YGs score, Ampleforth were in good shape at 57-1, but their lower and bottom order had no answers to the combined spin of Angus Shaw 4-18 off 3.5 overs and Pankaj Saini 5-15 off 9 overs. They were bowled out for 108 in under 30 overs.

Another excellent result for the YGs who are back home at Escrick this Wednesday to face York University in an afternoon match.

Back to winning Ways

On a cloudy but dry day the YG's had a switch to the planned venue and travelled to Aldborough St John, to play the Wanderers.

Batting first the YG's faced some tidy disciplined bowling but accumulated a decent score of 216-6. In spite of a smallish outfield it felt a competitive total. N Hammond was the pick of the batsmen with a fine 75 not out. He was well supported by Tom Robinson 29 and Jack Owram 45 at the top of the order.

In reply the Wanderers struggled against some fine bowling and were skittled for a modest 68 just after tea. Pankaj Saini producing an especially fine spell of 6-14 off 6.3 overs.

Can the YGs maintain their 100 per cent unbeaten run when they host the combat XI on the 6th June.?

Unbeaten Run Continues at Ampleforth

The YGs maintain their unbeaten start to the season on their visit to Ampleforth college to play the Old Amplefordians.

In perfect conditions the YGs batted first and posted a very competitive total. Jason Dale (53) and David O'Kelly (60) shared a 116 run opening partnership. Phil Holland added some useful runs late on with 38 not out and allowed the YGs to declare on 198 for 5 . Tight bowling however kept the scoring rate down with the OA's sending down 57 overs. A good effort in the heat of the day.

In reply the Old Amplefordians got off to a rapid start with T Bromet making 63. Some good bowling by the whole attack though pegged them back and they finished on 132 for 8 at the close of play. Phil Holland perhaps the pick of the bowlers with 3-14 off 7 overs.

YGs hold on against Strong Hawks team

The Hawks visited Escrcik for their annual encounter with the YGs. Electing to bat first the Hawks batted well and declared on 268 for 7. A.J Clarke bowled extremely well opening the bowling with 1-4 off 6 overs. Angus Shaw then picked up a five for as the Hawks accelerated towards a declaration (5-51 off 10.4 overs).

Perhaps leaving the YGs no realistic chance of winning the match the Hawks none the less bowled well and made batting difficult. D.Wellborne batted well for 61 and late resistance by the tail ensured the YGs maintained their unbeaten start to the season - just. The YGs ended on 141-9 at the close.

YG's draw their match with Sheffield Uni Staff

Escrick clubhouse at close of first innings

Escrick clubhouse at close of first innings

The overnight rain cleared to give a wonderful afternoons cricket at Escrick. Batting first the YG's found it hard going pre-lunch and were well pegged back to be on 98-5 at the end of the session. However, good batting post a port or two by Phill Holland -63, Pankaj Saini - 34 and Tim Smythe-Osborne - 19, gave the YG's a decent score of 195-8.

In response, Sheffield Uni Staff got off to a good start and were well placed at 85-1. The YG's bowling attack kept it tight during the final session and in the end neither side could push for victory. They ended the day on 162-7. Wayne Goldstein was the pick of the YG bowlers with 3-33 off 15 overs, but he was well backed up by the whole attack. Always a pleasure to host the Sheffield Uni Staff team, especially on a glorious May day. We hope to see them again next season.

YG's continue fine start to the Season with a win over York Wanderers

Another fine performance saw the YG's beat the York Wanderers under Mediterranean like skies at Escrick on Sunday 6th May.

Problems with traffic meant a delayed start with the Wanderers batting first. They soon were in trouble with some excellent bowling by YG's, and struggled to 87-8.  A.J Clark and Wayne Goldstein both taking three wickets apiece. However some positive lower order batting helped them reach 152-9 dec after, 48 overs.

In response the YG's raced to the target off just 28 overs scoring 154 for 4 with Phil Holland 64 not out. The YG's have made a really good start to the 2018 season and play Sheffield University Staff next Sunday.

3 out of 3 for The YG's as they beat St Peter's School in a thriller.

In a rain affected match reduced to 35 overs a side, the YG's made 154-4, with a well made 68 by David O'Kelly in his first match of the season being the backbone of the innings. He shared an opening stand of 71 with Bevan Fawcett (30). Charlie Elliot also contributed a useful 26.

In response St Peter's were going well at 76-1, until the spin magic of Bevan Fawcett, changed the complexion of the game. He took 7-35 off ten overs and bowled the YGs right into the match. In a tense finish the school fell just 2 runs short on 152-9 after their allotted overs.
